Millicent Prevocational General Practice Placement Program (PGPPP)

Interns in a Simulation session, 2009In 2007 Flinders University through the Flinders University Rural Clinical School in Mount Gambier was successful in its application to be fund holder for an intern placement program at Millicent. This is the first time that the University has been fund holder for such a program.

The Prevocational General Practice Placement Program (PGPPP) is a Commonwealth Government initiative, currently administered by the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine.

The program allows for interns on a one year internship with Mount Gambier & Districts Health Service to spend 11 weeks in general practice at The Medical Clinic, Millicent.

The first intern set off to Millicent in January 2008 and since then 8 interns have enjoyed this experience which adds a valuable dimension to hospital based internships.

Mount Gambier & Districts Health Service is the only non metropolitan hospital in South Australia to be accredited as a primary allocation hospital for the PGPPP.

Millicent, with a population around 5000, is located 50 km from Mount Gambier. The town provides a central hub for local farming and fishing communities. Kimberley Clark is the major employer and forestry is also one of the major industries.

The Medical Clinic at Millicent has nine full-time GPs, one part-time GP, plus a Registrar supported by a staff of 15 ancillary employees including a practice manager and one full-time and three part-time practice nurses.

Nearby Millicent Hospital has a 34 bed ward which caters for acute medical and surgical care as well as obstetric patients. Millicent GP’s manage some 95% of all obstetric patients in Millicent therefore giving interns rotating through this practice an excellent opportunity to observe obstetric procedures in the rural setting. The Millicent Hospital also has a 30 bed nursing home which provides exposure to the intern of the needs of an ageing population.

Dr Argy (left) and Dr McIntosh (centre) with interns at MillicentAt Millicent there are four accredited GP supervisors who will participate in the education program of the interns. The program is integrated with Registrar training and Parallel Rural Community Curriculum training, as Millicent hosts one Registrar in training and two Flinders University Medical Students on placement for the full year. The intern is released to attend Peer Learning Workshops provided by Greater Green Triangle GP education and Training (GGTGPET) and also to attend mandatory training and tutorials held at the Rural Clinical School, Mount Gambier.

Dr Michelle McIntosh returns to Millicent
